Multitalented Boston artist Dmoney Martinez is known to deliver a distinctive blend of sounds and vibes anchored by Hip-Hop, R&B, and his Latin roots.
The proud son of Latin parents, Martinez began playing music at the age of 6 when his father placed a keyboard in front of him. And ever since then, he’s been in love with the joy and freedom provided by playing and writing music. Now, he plays more than ten instruments while handling every aspect of the creative process, from penning lyrics to mixing and mastering his final product. And he does it all at his own studio, which he opened at age 16. We were able to catch up with him and ask a few questions.
Boston Culture: Where did you from/ grow up? How was that like?
DMoney Martinez: I grew up in Dorchester, Lorne St. off of Talbot Ave. Growing up there taught me everything about the struggle, I was able to see from a young age everything I did and did not want out of life. I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. Boston Culture: Talk to us about All the Smoke. How did you get the idea?
DMoney Martinez: For days I was telling myself I wanted to touch on the drill movement, but every time I heard a drill beat it didn't knock enough. Until one day I was in the studio listening to beats from producer, Synesthetic, I have been working with for my album 'LarryDrip 2'. The rest was history. The energy actually came from the streets. Too many people speak on my name whether it's business or personal, and I didn't want people thinking it was safe to do that.
Boston Culture : I want to get into the younger self's mentality.
DMoney Martinez: So my childhood was interesting. I like to think of it like, The Jacksons: An American Dream. A little less severe though lol. Going to rehearsals, playing adult gigs at a young age, having to wake up early for school the next morning, long studio sessions, and the traveling part was an experience within itself. Everything made sense in the end.
Boston Culture : What was the best advice you got early in your career? DMoney Martinez: The best advice I got early on in my career was to be disciplined. Always give it 100 percent or don't do it at all. Boston Culture : What do you dislike about the art world/music industry?
DMoney Martinez: I dislike the politics of the music industry. Things have become more about the financial aspect more than actual great music. Boston Culture : What do you think of the music scene in the State? Are there any other Boston producers or artists you'd potentially like to work with for the next project? DMoney Martinez: Crabs in a bucket, sharks in a fish tank is what I think of the music scene. A Lot of talent in my opinion but the business side gets overlooked. My resume is pretty steep. I'm a recording studio owner and an excellent audio engineer. If I haven't had a chance to record a song with an artist, 9 out of the 10 times I probably had the opportunity to record them.
Boston Culture: Tell us about your goals for 2021. Both personal and business. DMoney Martinez: My goals for 2021 are to remain consistent musically, be there more and as much as possible for my kids, give back as much knowledge as I could about the music industry to those less fortunate, and buy my first house.
