Boston Culture: Where did you grow up?
Shy Gawdly: Boston MA born and raised, Roxbury specifically. And also did a lot of back and forth to Brooklyn NY, being that my dad was a single parent and just naturally wanted to make sure his first born had the NY experiences and see where he came from, along with making sure we was always in contact with my family from there. But yea man My neighborhood in Boston can get a little crazy sometimes but growing up there it never really feels like is out of control, but on the outside looking in I can see why people call it “the hood”. Blue hill ave especially near merengue restaurant all the way down to Dudley st you’ll see a lot of crackheads/dope heads and alcoholics and within the area there’s a few different hoods so you see a few people from different sides getting money however they gotta get it. and sometimes it can get a lil mixy when everybody hungry for bread within only a mile or 2.
Boston Culture: How did you get your name?
Shy Gawdly: People ask this a lot and the first part of my Government is “Shy” but the Gawdly part just comes from me always feeling like I was meant for something. I can’t die a regular person cause I never been regular in my opinion. Always held my chin high along with my pride and walked with grace. Always have been a leader without forcing anyone to follow me. Unmatched aura/energy amongst those who don’t really know their worth. I used to tell my grandmother ima have big houses and cars from a toddler. And through music I see that happening.
Boston Culture: What was the best advice you got early in your career?
Shy Gawdly: “You can’t have 1 foot in the music, and 1 foot in the streets, gotta be all in wit it or you’ll fail like the rest”
Boston Culture: Walk us through the first time you ever made a song.
Shy Gawdly: really I was just always getting in trouble because of my temper and wanted to talk about real situations in my life but at the time I didn’t really know how, but one day after hearing me my dad brought me to the studio and at this point I was new to actually recording. I just remember feeling like I was gunna do bad but as soon as I heard my voice on the mic it was solidified. I knew that’s what I wanted To do And I always knew I could make it better and really shape my craft.
Boston Culture: Walk us through your creative process in the studio.
Shy Gawdly: I don’t really write really at all unless it’s 100% necessary,I usually can feel what the song is gunna be about in the first 15 seconds of listening to the beat
Boston Culture: What do you dislike about the art world/music industry?
Shy Gawdly: The fact that these days without the image, your never gunna be a star. I’ve heard some crazy fire artist who just don’t fit the part so it’s almost a definite that they won’t go anywhere with their talent. Who you know and what you look like catches the eyes of this generation more than the quality of your music and that’s not valid in my eyes.
Boston Culture: Who or what are some of your biggest influences?
Shy Gawdly: my early roots stem from a lot of M.O.P , Gucci Maine, Capone and Noriega, 36 Mafia, Jadakiss, Fabulous and a few others. But growing up a little and starting to move away from my dads style of music made me be drawn more to artists like drake, ty dolla $ign, PND, a boogie, Tory lanez and Kevin gates.
Boston Culture: Talks to us about your younger mentality.
Shy Gawdly: Younger me wasn’t really a good listener but I’ve definitely become more militant and mature when it comes to focusing on my career. If State corrections taught me anything it was to COME HOME AND STAY FOCUSED
Boston Culture: What do you think of the music scene in the State? Are there any other Boston producers or artists you'd potentially like to collab with in the future?
Shy Gawdly: it’s building up to something and there’s a few artists in the city making real noise BUT the acknowledgment we get is still below where it should be and yea there’s a few artist I wanna work with but for now Imma let the suspension build
Boston Culture: Tell us about your goals for 2021.
Shy Gawdly: 2021 is all about progress and stepping stones. Working and storing content. At the end of this year you’ll see me on a higher plat form, but it’s 2022 y’all should be worried about!
Boston Culture: Did the pandemic affect any of your plans? What do you miss the most about live performances?
Shy Gawdly: I was locked up during the worst of the pandemic and if you thought being locked up was trash, it got even worse in there. Barley any rec time, no basketball, no gym, no chow hall (cafeteria), no library, NOTHING, strictly unit and cell time.
Boston Culture: How did you catch the attention of Vybe Ent.
Shy Gawdly: how we met ain’t really important... just know we’re locked in coming for the top spot
