Boston based lyricist Bruce Smith wins the coveted “Best Song” award from Songwriter Universe, a popular music magazine showcasing the best of the best in music.
Boston Culture: Congrats on winning the SongwriterUniverse “Best Song” Contest! How does it feel? How did you pursue the opportunity?
Bruce Smith: Honestly, it feels unreal! Dave Kawashima is the man! Check out his bio. I was shocked to receive a call from him and hear that he liked my song. Being selected by ASCAP gave me the confidence to submit my song to this songwriting competition, where people like Meagan Trainer..etc were discovered.
Boston Culture: Talk to us about your mindset and what your goals are for this year.
Bruce Smith: My goal is to complete my courses at MIT in Software Engineering and to write for people in the industry, Have my song selected for Movie/Tv and meet Michael Bivins.
Boston Culture: What advice do you have for aspiring songwriters?
Bruce Smith: Just keep writing ✍️. Learn Music Theory(bend and break some rules) and don’t be afraid to apply it.
Boston Culture: Talk to us about your collab with ASCAP. How did that come about?
Bruce Smith:The guys at ASCAP are amazing! I guess they were listening and chose my song out of hundreds to be part of their playlist and featured in the ASCAP Experience magazine.
Boston Culture: Any other dream publication that you want to speak into existence?
Bruce Smith: I would love to have my song featured in Film/TV. That’s my goal! I would love to work with some of my favorite artists in the industry. Recently I got the opportunity to speak to some of my favorite artists and work with some. I would love to build a relationship with the musicians and Boston and create an industry writing squad.
Boston Culture: What else would you like to tell your fans?
Bruce Smith: Please call in to Jamn 94.5 and request to have my song B.Smith - Square One played on the radio. I have my song played around the world and would love support from the radio station in my own city.
