Best of Both Worlds, Boston's OWN: Shy Gawdly

Updated: Nov 3, 2021

Nothing beats the fun atmosphere that rapper, Shy Gawdly, brings to everyone's ears. Being a young rapper from Roxbury, he has shown his fans that he can come up from his hardships and put an endless amount of effort in his work. After working with household names like Dave East, we are eager to find out more about what Shy has in the works.

Boston Culture: Let’s start with your origins of growing up in both Boston and New York; did that influence the music you are making today?

Shy Gawdly: The short answer, yes. And I like this question because people ask me frequently why my sound has a New York vibe, I’m born and raised in Roxbury-Boston, MA but being that my dad is from Brooklyn and my mom wasn’t around, I was often back and forth between both cities, specifically Brooklyn. So for me it’s like the best of both worlds.

Boston Culture: Who is your inspiration behind your music?

Shy Gawdly: To be honest it wasn’t a specific person that inspired me to do music, it was more of the situations I was going through and not being a big talker when it comes to my life that made me wanna put it into music.

Boston Culture: Since making music since 2015, how has your music changed since then?

Shy Gawdly: I would say my craft has developed to the point that it’s hard not to recognize me in my city, and consistently dealing with life adversities naturally made me better at saying what I had to say in my tracks.

Boston Culture: Talk to us about "GO GO" What was your inspiration to make this visual?

Shy Gawdly: Honestly gang, I just wanted to make a Tik Tok song LOL.

From the "GO GO" music video. Out now on Youtube.

Boston Culture: You sound very confident in your music, especially on the track “GO GO”. Has it been hard to build up the confidence you have now, especially during the pandemic?

Shy Gawdly: Well for starters I was in prison during the pandemic so I had no choice but to focus on me. Only connections I had with the outside world was basic cable and phone calls. My confidence has always been high since I was a kid but with music you just gotta learn what works for you through trial and error.

Boston Culture : How has your mentality changed since Covid?

Shy Gawdly: COVID made me realize that the world will believe anything that the government feeds them and that there’s a bigger picture to this shit but ima save that for another time.

Boston Culture: After working with Millyz and Dave East, what has that taught you about moving forward in your career as an artist? Has that changed your perception of the industry?

Shy Gawdly: First off shout out to the bros Millyz and Dave East for showing so much love, and honestly bro working with two people that’s been doing this music thing longer than half my age, I got to see that hard work is the only thing that can get you next to the right people in this game.

Boston Culture: Tell us about your goals for the rest of 2021 into 2022. Where will you be by the end of the year. Let's start manifesting that now.

Shy Gawdly: For the rest of this year my goal is to just go harder today than what I did yesterday. Who knows, I can sign to a major label any day or keep it independent but stay tuned.

Boston Culture: Anything else we missed you want to tell your fans? What do you have cooking up as far as any collabs or performances.

Shy Gawdly: I just wanna tell my supporters I appreciate y’all and there’s a lot of new music on the way. Oh yeah and be on the look out for my newest project “Evil Twin” releasing exclusively on Soundcloud. Even though I don’t release music on there that often anymore, I have to because the samples on this tape could get the songs deleted if I distribute through all platforms.

"Evil Twin" dropping 10/31, exclusively on Soundcloud.

After listening to Shy's music, it is truly worth a listen. He includes all aspects of New York culture, especially drill, in his style, all the while keeping it authentic. Here at Boston Culture, we got to experience what Shy Gawdly is about and have high hopes for his work in the future.
